Who is Artemis?

Artemis Investment Management Limited was established by Mark Tyndall, John Dodd, Derek Stuart and Lindsay Whitelaw in 1997 as a dedicated active investment management house specialising in investments for retail investors. They wanted to create a company that offered investors superior returns and service, as well as being a progressive, vibrant and comfortable place to work for its employees.

The company has grown to the extent that it now manages an asset base of some £16.5bn*. Clients' investments are spread across a range of unit trusts, an investment trust, hedge fund products, venture capital trusts, an international SICAV as well as segregated institutional portfolios.

Why invest in the stockmarket?

Stock market investing has traditionally provided significantly higher returns than those available from bank or building society savings accounts, albeit with higher levels of risk and potential volatility. Recent stock market turbulence has prompted further fears amongst investors, particularly those who suffered as a result of the bursting of the technology bubble in 2000.

The chart below shows the five year returns on a selected basket of 30 global stocks since 1950. The year along the bottom of the chart represents the end of each five year period. As you can see, only seven of the 48 rolling five-year periods posted negative returns, and only one – the most recent – has occurred since the end of the effects of the 1973 oil crisis. Whilst you might think that the stock market’s returns in the late 1990s were unprecedented and unlikely to be repeated, it is clear from the graph that there have been similar periods of growth in the past.

Please remember past performance is not a guide to future performance. The value of an investment, and any income from it, can fall as well as rise as a result of market and currency fluctuations and you may not get back the amount originally invested. Unlike a bank or building society account, investors capital is at risk when investing in equities and bonds.

Why invest with Artemis?

When markets are volatile, the fund managers who offer the best returns are the talented stockpickers. The Artemis investment managers have proven stockpicking skills, supported by a proven and disciplined team process. That’s what investment managers are for: using their expertise to create superior returns. Too many managers claim to be active managers, but in reality offer investments which simply replicate the stock market – or worse. Our focus is on our funds and their investors. Markets change all the time, so we trade the holdings of our funds actively. We do not believe that the price of a share always accurately reflects all the relevant information available. By identifying these discrepancies in the market, we aim to seek out those stocks, sectors and regions which offer the best potential for higher returns.
To us, aiming for average performance is not good enough.

What risks exists when investing in the stock market?

As noted above, over longer periods shares have performed better than other investments. Therefore, you should invest for at least five years and preferably a lot longer. Past performance cannot be regarded as a guide to the future and, because of the higher volatility of stock market investments, the value of units and the income from them can fall as well as rise. If you encash your units, especially in the early years, you may not get back the amount originally invested.

Each of our funds has a different investment objective and risk profile. Whilst each fund is managed in accordance with its objectives you must be alert to the fund specific risk factors which may affect your return. These depend on the underlying assets each fund invests in and you should refer to the fund literature before making any investment.

How much will any advice cost?

We are not permitted to advise you on the suitability or otherwise of investing in the funds. You may take the advice of an authorised independent financial adviser who will give you details about the cost of their advice. The amount may depend on the size and frequency of your investment or investments, and in the case of regular savings the period over which you make them. Such commissions will be paid out of the charges levied by Artemis.

For example, if you were to invest £1,000 and we paid commission of 3%, then commission of £30 would be paid to your adviser. We may also make renewal commission payments. For example, should we pay renewal commission of 0.5% and your investment is worth £5,000 we would pay £25, and should it be worth £10,000 we would pay £50 per year. Renewal commission is paid in two six-monthly instalments. Please note that renewal commission is paid out of the fund and not from the individual client account.

How are units priced?

The value of your units is related directly to the value of the investments and cash held by the relevant fund. The assets of the fund are valued on each business day, and the unit prices calculated in accordance with the Financial Services Authority’s regulations. There are two prices calculated daily, a ‘bid’ price and an ‘offer’ price. You purchase units at the offer price and sell units at the bid price. The difference between the two is known as the ‘spread’ and includes our initial charge. The price at which you buy units is the 'offer' price. Units can be sold at the 'bid' price unless subject to the large deals policy.

Dealing takes place on a forward basis meaning that when you invest in our funds you will pay the offer price calculated at the next valuation point. Funds are valued at 12 noon

Will I receive income?

Yes, when you invest in a fund which offers distribution units. The Artemis Income fund distributes income half-yearly. The Artemis High Income fund distributes quarterly and the Artemis Strategic Bond fund distributes income monthly and quarterly depending on the share class invested. Income will be paid into your nominated bank account on the relevant distribution date. The other funds aim for capital growth and only issue accumulation units meaning income is not distributed. Instead, any income generated by the funds is accumulated and reflected in an increase in the value of your existing units.

What charges will I pay?

When you purchase units you pay a one-off initial charge to Artemis which is included in the purchase price. Thereafter, Artemis is remunerated by way of an annual charge which is calculated as a percentage of the value of each fund. Additionally, each Fund is liable for other smaller charges including Trustee fees, registration, bank, custodial and audit fees and other allowable expenses. The Total Expense Ratio ("TER") shows, as a percentage, the annual operating expenses of the Funds – it does not include the preliminary charge, which is shown separately, or transaction costs. The TER is the internationally accepted standard for the comparison of these costs. With effect from 29th January 2007, in line with resolutions passed, further expenses will be charged to the Funds. These charges include, but not limited to:

  • costs incurred for unitholder meetings;
  • any fees and expenses for any legal or professional advice for the Funds;
  • costs incurred in publishing daily prices and any costs incurred in preparing, translating, producing (including printing), distributing and modifying a Trust Deed, the Prospectus or the Simplified Prospectus;
  • charges related to Fund administration and accounting activities.

Full details of charges are listed in the Prospectus.

Please note that the Income and High Income funds deduct the annual management charge from capital, the effect of which will be to constrain capital growth over time.

For details on Initial Charges, Annual Charges and Other Charges visit our Prices page.

Why do you need to verify my identity?

Criminals and terrorists need cash. Criminals and terrorists launder the dirty cash made from fraud, drug trafficking, smuggling and robbery into clean money by using false identities or taking the names of innocent people. So having your identity checked protects the financial system by helping to prevent and detect crime, which includes terrorism. And it helps protect you from identity theft and fraud. This is why the law says that fund managers must identify their customers.

When you invest with Artemis we will ask you to present information or documents about yourself so that we can confirm your name and address. We will ask for information from new customers and we may also ask for information from existing and returning customers from time to time. But you will not have to prove your identity every time you deal with us. All personal information is held securely and confidentially and these measures do not mean suspicion is falling on you. Documents you can use to verify your name include: passport; driving licence; benefits book or original letter from a benefits agency; or Inland Revenue tax notifications.

Documents you can use to verify your address include: recent council tax or utilities bills; recent bank or building society statements; recent mortgage statement; or council rent card or tenancy agreement.

When verifying your identity we may also make electronic searches of the electoral roll and use credit reference agencies. In accordance with Data Protection laws you should note that your instruction to invest with Artemis represents permission from you to access this information.
